Nimesulide

Nimesulide is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) with relative specificity for COX-2 that is not available in the United States, but is used widely in other countries in the treatment of acute pain. Nimesulide has been linked to a low rate of transient serum enzyme elevations during therapy, but also to many instances of clinically apparent acute liver injury that can be severe and can result in acute liver failure, need for emergency liver transplantation and death. It is grouped under the following drug class(es): Cyclooxygenase‑2 (COX‑2) Inhibitors, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) and Sulfones. Its therapeutic use is listed as analgesics, anti-inflammatories, antipyretics and osteoarthritis agents. The directory classifies it as a commercial API with a synthetic source/manufacturing origin. Other names for this substance include Nimesulidum and 4′-Nitro-2′-phenoxymethanesulfonanilide. Its PubChem CID is 4495.
