Geneticin

Geneticin (G418) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic mainly used in molecular biology and cell culture applications rather than as a therapeutic drug. Its main function is to select genetically engineered cells that carry a resistance gene, including the neomycin resistance (neoR) gene, allowing only the modified cells to survive while non-resistant cells are eliminated. This makes it an essential tool for creating stable transfected cell lines in research involving mammalian, yeast, or other eukaryotic cells. Geneticin works by inhibiting protein synthesis in cells, a property that is harnessed in vitro to ensure that only cells containing the desired genetic modification continue to grow. Its toxicity prevents it from being used in humans, so its applications are entirely restricted to laboratory and experimental settings. The directory classifies it as a commercial API with a fermentation-derived source/manufacturing origin. Other names for this substance include G418 Disulfate and Geneticin disulfate. Its PubChem CID is 16218858.
